From St. Moritz, Switzerland
Francesco Friedrich is the junior world champion, and is looking to double-up as world champion this weekend. So far, so good, and Friedrich is up by .2 over home-track slider Beat Hefti. Both sliders had identical pushes, but Friedrich out-drove Hefti down the 1722 meter track, leaving Hefti in second, just ahead of a tie for third between Steven Holcomb and Alexander Zubkov. Canadian slider Chris Spring is fifth.
A big run for American Cory Butner leaves him eighth after Heat 1 of four, while teammate Nick Cunningham sits 14th after just a couple small mistakes. Canada also has two sleds in the top 10, with Lyndon Rush sitting 10th, while Justin Kripps is just outside in 12th. It’s been a tough start for Great Britain, with John Jackson 22nd and Lamin Deen 26th.
