From Lillehammer, NOR
(January 10, 2025) – Corie Mapp slid to victory in the season opener in Lillehammer, out-lasting a pair of world champions for the top spot.
Mapp took the lead by .21 over Italy’s Flavio Menardi after the first heat. Both Jonas Frei and Hermann Ellmauer were within .07 of Menardi in third and fourth.
In the second heat, Ellmauer took the lead from USA’s Robert Balk and then held the spot as neither Frei or Menardi could match his second heat downtime.
Mapp was the last pilot pushed off. While his second slide wasn’t quite as quick as his first, it was still the fastest run of the heat as the Brit took gold by .29 over Ellmauer, with Frei third.
Mapp’s gold medal was the 14th of his career and 35th World Cup medal.
Menardi and Balk were fourth and fifth, while Guillermo Castillo finished one spot behind Balk in sixth.
Americans Austin Parker and Dan Rizzieri were 14th and 15th.
