Pfeifer & Jungk Slide to Gold in Snowy St. Moritz

(January 10, 2025) – Jacqueline Pfeifer and Axel Jungk won a very snowy skeleton mixed team event in St. Moritz as they edged out the Americans and Brits for top honors.

The race kicked off with Spain’s Clara Aznar and Adrian Rodriguez who set the pace early, but were out-slid by Latvia’s Darta Neimane and Davis Valdovskis, in their first team event. The American duo of Kelly Curtis and Dan Barefoot then slid to the lead, and for a good while refused to let it go. As the snow continued to fall, seven teams came and went with the Americans in the leaders’ box until China’s Yuxi Li and Wenhao Chen edged them out by just a tenth of a second.

The Chinese team held their lead momentarily but were bumped by the USA-1 team of Mystique Ro and Austin Florian. Both Ro and Florian had the second quickest start time, while Ro put down the quick time for the women.

The Americans held their spot for two teams until Pfeifer and Jungk took over from the 16th starting spot, with Jungk setting the quick reaction time for the men with a perfect .05 and the quickest downtime of anyone.

From there, a combination of some bumpier slides, some heavier snow, and a jumped start kept everyone behind the Germans. Amelia Coltman and Matt Weston took off from the 18th starting spot and would have taken the lead, but a .61 penalty was assessed to Matt Weston after he jumped the start. Weston’s slide was still enough to put the Brits into third behind Ro and Florian on the strength of the fastest start in the competition.

Neither the Austrian team of women’s race winner Janine Flock and Samy Maier, nor the duo of Susanne Kreher and Lukas Nydegger had anything for Pfefier and Jungk, with the Austrians fourth and GER-1 team seventh.

The gold was the first for Pfeifer and second for Jungk in the mixed team event.

Ro and Florian took silver, Ro’s first and Florian’s second, while Coltman and Weston both won their first World Cup medal in the discipline.

Flock and Maier were fourth, ahead of Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt who were fifth. Dan Zhao and Zheng Yin rounded out the top six.
