Weston Cruises to Second Straight Victory

From St. Moritz, SUI

(January 10, 2025) – Matt Weston won his second straight race of the season, this time handily on a track he won the 2023 world championship on.

After one heat it looked like a very similar story from the 2023 championships, with Wyatt ahead of Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis. Bagnis, who had won the World Cup race in St. Moritz last season, was just a hundredth ahead of Christopher Grotheer, with the rest of the field at least three tenths behind.

In the second heat Grotheer slid to the fastest time of the heat to that point, ahead of teammate Axel Jungk. Bagnis went next and was ahead of the German for the bulk of his run. But while Bagnis was clean and quick, Grotheer was just a little bit better and after over two miles of racing, Grotheer led Bagnis by just .02.

Weston was the final slider off. His start was the second quickest of the race; he had set the quick time of the first heat, and his second time was even .17 faster than that. He ended up with the two fastest runs of the day, which was enough to win by .54 over Grotheer, with Bagnis third.

The win for Weston was his seventh medal in seven races this season, and 20th World Cup medal in his career.

For Grotheer, the silver was his 27th World Cup medal, and for Bagnis his third.

Jungk jumped up from tenth to fourth place with the fourth quickest slide of the heat. American Austin Florian was just .02 behind in fifth, while Lukas Nydegger and Samy Maier were sixth, tied .02 behind Florian.

Great Britian’s Marcus Wyatt finished eighth after entering the second heat in sixth place. Teammate Jacob Salisbury slid from 25th in the first heat to 22nd.

For the sixth time in seventh races, American Dan Barefoot finished 21st place. Teammate Nick Tucker missed out on a second run by just .07 and finished 26th.

For Canada, Kyle Murray finished 33rd, while Josip Brusic finished in 35th, tied with Israel’s Jared Firestone. Malaysia’s Jonathan Yaw finished in between the three in 34th.

With his win, Matt Weston holds a commanding lead in the World Cup standings with one race to go. He’s 123 points ahead of teammate Marcus Wyatt, with Christopher Grotheer third, 37 points behind Wyatt. Weston needs a finish of 15th or better in Lillehammer to
