From Igls, AUT
(December 19, 2024) – Maureen Zimmer slid to victory in the opening round of the 2024/2025 IBSF Europe Cup, ahead of Debora Annen and Kristen Bujnowski.
Zimmer led Bujnowski and Annen after the first heat, with USA’s Sylvia Hoffman sitting in fourth.
In the second heat, Hoffman was unable to match her first effort and gave way to teammate Lauren Brzozowski, who had been seventh after the first heat but had put down the quickest run of the second heat to that point.
Switzerland’s Annen was next. Her second run nearly matched her first and she moved into the lead, a spot she held for one more sled as Bujnowski fell behind her by just .05.
Germany’s Zimmer proved to be too much in both heats. She was the only slider to break the 55 second barrier in either run, enough to give her the win by .38 over Annen.
Zimmer’s gold was her fifth in Europe Cup monobob action. For Annen, her silver was a career-best finish outside of St. Moritz.
Bujnowski won bronze on the strength of the quickest start in both heats. It was her second start in Europe Cup monobob; she now has two medals to show for it with a bronze on Thursday to go with her prior season’s silver.
Like Bujnowski, Brzozowski made her second Europe Cupe start in monobob. Her fourth place finish matched her finish in St. Moritz in the 2023/2024 season.
Germany’s Charlotte Candrix finished fifth, a tenth of a second ahead of Belgium’s Kelly Van Petegem and the Netherlands’ Loren Djolo, who tied for sixth.
USA’s Hoffman finished eighth, .05 out of the top six.
Italy’s Simona de Silvestro finished 12th, up from 13th in the first heat, while Australia’s Sarah Blizzard slid to 15th.
