2012/2013 FIBT World Cup – Round 8 – Two-Man Bobsled – Heat 1

From Igls, Austria

Beat Hefti’s next two-man race will be in St. Moritz in his home nation of Switzerland.  What better way to get some momentum than to take a win in the previous race.  After one heat, eat least, Hefti is in position to do so.  Hefti’s lead is .03 over Thomas Florschuetz and .06 over Francisco Friedrich, both of Germany.  Oskars Melbardis of Latvia and Canadian Lyndon Rush round out the top 5.  Alexander Zubkov is sixth.

The Americans are debuting a new USA-1 sled designed by BMW USA.  The sled was quick for Steven Holcomb, but a hard tap on the wall on the load left Holcomb back in 15th after Heat 1.  Cory Butner, in turn, leads the way for the Americans in 7th, with Nick Cunningham tied for 9th with Canadian Chris Spring.  Justin Kripps is 11th in the third Canadian entry.

A very tough load for John Jackson in the GBR-1 sled leaves the veteran on the outside looking in for the second heat, and is joined by Lamin Deen, who just misses the second heat as well.
