2012/2013 FIBT World Cup – Round 8 – Men’s Skeleton

From Igls, Austria

You’ll hear some sliders say that they’re using this week’s race in Igls as a prep for the coming World Championships.  If that’s the case for Martins Dukurs, the rest of the men’s skeleton field is in for a world of hurt in St. Moritz.  Dukurs won again, this time by .75 over Alexander Tretjyakov on the strength of a new track record on each heat.  The Russian put down a pair of fantastic runs, but it wasn’t enough to top the Latvian.  It was two Dukurses (Dukuri?) on the podium, with Tomass finishing third.  Sergei Chudinov of Russia and Frank Rommel of Germany round out the top five.

There were inconsistent runs all over for the American men, with John Daly leading the way in 16th, while Matt Antoine and Kyle Tress finished 17th and 19th.

Despite being terribly sick, Eric Neilson finishes sixth for Canada, just ahead of 2010 Vancouver Olympics champion Jon Montgomery in eighth and John Fairbairn in 15th.  Kristan Bromley led the way for British Skeleton in 10th, breaking a tie with teammate Dominic Parsons, who finishes 11th.  Ed Smith takes 14th as the third British entry.
