From Igls, Austria
Elena Nikitina needed a flawless run to beat America’s Noelle Pikus-Pace. Nikitina found speed on all parts of the track and takes gold in just her third race at the World Cup level. Pikus-Pace had two great runs but it wasn’t quite enough to beat the young Russian, and takes silver, while Maria Orlova’s bronze medal makes it two Russians on the podium for the first time this year in women’s skeleton.
There was a three-way tie for 4th between three continents: Australia’s Michelle Steele, Canada’s Sarah Reid and Austria’s Janine Flock all tie, with Steele jumping all the way up from 10th in Heat 1. Steele had the second fastest run of the second heat and the third fastest overall.
American Katie Uhlaender couldn’t find the start time she’s accustomed to, and finished 10th. Mellisa Hollingsworth and Cassie Hawrysh finish 12th and 17th for Canada, while Lizzy Yarnold led the way for Great Britain in 9th, while track record holder Shelley Rudman finished 11th and Donna Creighton 15th.
