From Pyeongchang, KOR
(November 9, 2024) – A day after finishing just behind her teammate, Brazil’s Nicole Silveira slid to gold in Pyeongchang.
Silveira trailed Belgium’s Kim Meylemans by .05 after the first heat. Behind them, Czechia’s Anna Fernstädt, Germany’s Susanne Kreher and the Netherlands’ Kimberley Bos were all in the hunt.
In the second heat Jacqueline Pfeifer put down a quick run from eighth to take the lead. The German held that lead as teammate Hannah Neise, USA’s Mystique Ro, Bos, and Kreher all took their second runs to move into the medals with only Silveira and Meylemans to go.
Silveira’s second run was .8 off the pace of her first effort, but was enough to pick off Pfeifer to guarantee her second straight medal.
Meylemans’ second start was the second quickest of the heat and enough to give her the lead early in the second run. But her second slide was not quite as smooth as her first, and as she crossed the line she found herself in second place, .14 behind Silveira, giving the Brazilian the victory.
Silveira’s gold was her first since November 2021, where she won five of six North American Cup and Intercontinental Cup races in Whistler and Park City. Meyemans’s silver was her sixth medal in seven races between World Cup and Asian Cup.
For Pfeifer, the bronze was her fifth medal in six races in Pyeongchang. She’d previously won World Cup and Intercontinental Cup gold, plus a silver in the 2018 Winter Olympics and ICC bronze.
Fernstädt finished only .07 out of the medals in fourth, .02 ahead of Bos in fifth. USA’s Ro finished sixth for the second time in two days.
Katie Uhlaender and Sara Roderick finished 13th and 22nd for the United States. Teammate Kelly Curtis finished 29th in her second race since returning from maternity leave.
Great Britain’s Amerlia Coltman finished 12th, two spots ahead of teammate Freya Tarbit in 14th. Team GB put all three of their athletes in the second heat with Tabitha Stoecker in 23rd.
Jane Channell edged out teammate Hallie Clarke by .01 to be the top Canadian as the two women finished 18th and 19th. Grace Dafoe finished 41st.
The Asian Cup will take about a week off before resuming on Thursday and Friday, just before the IBSF World Cup kicks off, also in Pyeongchang.
