From Lillehammer, NOR
(March 8, 2024) – Corie Mapp came from behind to snatch gold from Christopher Stewart in Lillehammer.
Stewart led Great Britain’s Mapp and Latvia’s Arturs Klots by .04 each, with Balk back in third, just .11 back in a tight race after one heat.
In the second heat, Balk slid to the lead ahead of Italy’s David Jennewein. Up next were the duo of Klots and Mapp. While Klots was unable to match his first run time and fell behind Balk, Mapp slid to the lead, .17 ahead of Balk.
Stewart, the previous race winner in St. Moritz, was the last slider off. The Swiss pilot was ahead early, but couldn’t quite match the quick first run he put down. His second downtime was only fourth quickest and while it was enough for a medal, he fell a tenth of a second short of gold.
Mapp took the victory, his first this season and 13th World Cup gold of his career.
Stewart’s silver was his second medal on the season and 16th medal in his career.
Klots took fourth, .02 ahead of Jennewein in fifth, with Jennewein’s teammate Flavio Menardi rounding out the top six.
Other than Balk, the United States struggled in Norway. Guillermo Castillo finished 11th, two spots ahead of Austin Parker in 13th. David Christopher finished 14th.
