From Altenberg, Germany
It’s a tight race so far in rainy Altenberg. German Max Arndt, who didn’t race in two-man yesterday, leads by .24 over Latvia’s Oskars Melbardis. The LAT 1 team is just barely ahead of a gaggle of teams, including Saturday’s winner Thomas Florschuetz, Jan Vrba, Manuel Machata and Canada’s Lyndon Rush, who are third through sixth, respectively. The second heat should have a bit of shuffling of position, with it really being anyone’s race.
British Bobsleigh’s John Jackson sits ninth after a bumper-than-normal run down Altenberg’s rainy track.
Lots of absent teams, with the USA, Russia, Switzerland and the bulk of Canada choosing instead to train for the World Championships in St. Moritz. In turn, with 17 sleds, everyone will get a second run today.
