(February 17, 2024) – There have been dominating performances in luge. There have been dominating seasons in luge. But nobody has owned a tour the way Evelin Lanthaler has.
On Saturday she cruised to another World Cup victory and with it another World Cup title.
As she has all season, Lanthaler took the lead from the start, and never looked back. Lanthaler took a .62 second lead over Austria’s top junior slider Riccarda Ruetz, with Germany’s Lisa Walch in third.
In the second heat Tina Unterberger moved into the lead and held off Walch to guarantee herself a medal, her first since the season opener. Ruetz then picked off her teammate to move into the lead with only Lanthaler to go.
Lanthaler, once again, had the fastest downtime to win by over a second ahead of Ruetz and Unterberger, who finished second and third.
Lanthaler’s win was her 27th straight and 38th out of the last 39 races. With it, she clinched the season title a race early with a 115 point lead over Ruetz with one race to go.
The title is Lanthaler’s seventh straight and eighth in the last nine seasons.
Ruetz’s silver medal clinched a career-best second place overall. Unterberger’s bronze put her 41 points ahead of Jenny Castiglioni.
