From Oberhof, GER
(February 10, 2024) – Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal came from behind in the first of two race weekends in Oberhof to win gold in Germany.
The German duo trailed Austrian’s Selina Egle and Lara Kipp after the first heat, with Italy’s Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer just back in third. Like in the men’s race, the women’s doubles race saw warmer air conditions with ice conditions that were still relatively stable.
In the second heat Vötter and Oberhofer took the lead from Germany’s Dajana Eitberger and Saskia Schirmer, but were quickly overtaken by Degenhardt and Rosenthal by just .033.
The last team off the top were Egle and Kipp, the winner of the first two races of the season. The Austrians’ second effort was just a tick off their first run pace, which was enough to hand the victory to Degenhardt and Rosenthal, and silver to Vötter and Oberhofer.
The win was Degenhardt and Rosenthal’s fourth in five races, while the silver for Vötter and Oberhofer gave them six medals in seven events this season.
For Egle and Kipp, their bronze waws their second medal in four events.
Eitberger and Schirmer finished fourth, with Latvia’s Anda Upite and Kitija Bogdanova in fifth. For the sixth time in seven races, Americans Maya Chan and Reannyn Weiler finished sixth.
Chevonne Forgan and Sophie Kirkby finished seventh, just over a tenth behind their American teammates.
With five races to go in the 2023/2024 FIL World Cup season, Degenhardt and Rosenthal lead Vötter and Oberhofer by ten points. Egle and Kipp and Eitberger and Schirmer are third and fourth, also within 100 points of the leaders. Forgan and Kirkby sit fifth, with Chan and Weiler in sixth.
