From Jaufental, ITA
(February 4, 2024) – In the closest race of the European Championships in Jaufental, Patrick Pigneter held off both Michael Scheikl and Fabian Brunner to win his first singles championship in nine years.
Pigneter was the penultimate slider off the top in the first heat and slid to the lead by .09 over Austria’s Scheikl, with teammate Brunner only .15 out of the lead in third.
The second heat saw Brunner take the lead from Daniel Gruber, who had picked off Florian Clara. Scheikl’s second slide was slower than Brunner’s, but was just enough to hold off the Italian by just a hundredth of a second.
That left the door wide open for Pigneter. Pigneter’s second slide put him neck-and-neck with Scheikl throughout the final run of the day. The bottom third of the track is where Pigneter excelled in the second run and was enough to give him a victory by .17 over Scheikl, with Brunner .18 back in third.
The victory was the first singles championship since the 2015 World Championships in St. Sebastian, Austria and first European Championship singles championship since 2014 in Umhausen.
