From Jaufental, ITA
(February 4, 2024) – As she has throughout the 2023/2024 FIL World Cup season, Italy’s Evelin Lanthaler dominated the race in Jaufental to win the FIL European Championship.
Lanthaler carried a full one second lead over Austria’s juniors phenom Riccarda Ruetz, with Nadine Staffler in third, .35 behind Ruetz.
In the second heat, Jenny Castiglioni picked off Staffler (as well as Austria’s Hannah Nagele and Tina Unterberger) with the second quickest run of the heat to take the lead and guarantee a medal with two to go.
Ruetz was up next, and while her second run wasn’t quite as quick as her first it was still enough to hold off Castiglioni to move into the lead with just Lanthaler to go.
Lanthaler’s second run, one again, was over a second faster than anyone else’s second heat. In fact, her second run was faster than anyone in the men’s race’s second run later in the day.
The end result was a 2.36 second victory over Ruetz, with Castiglioni in third, .21 behind Ruetz.
Staffler, Unterberger, and Nagele rounded out the top six.
The championship was Lanthaler’s fifth straight European Championship title.
