(February 3, 2024) – Anka Jänicke rallied from behind to win the Junior World Cup finale in sunny St. Moritz.
Jänicke trailed teammate Antonia Pietschmann by .112 after one heat, with the remainder of the field over a quarter of a second behind.
In the second heat Jänicke nearly matched her first run’s downtime to take the lead from Latvia’s Zane Kaluma. Pietschmann’s second effort was the second quickest of the heat but not enough to hold off Jänicke as Jänicke took gold by .044 and Pietschmann silver.
The gold for Jänicke was her first of the season, while the silver for Pietschmann was her second.
Kaluma won bronze in her first start of the season.
Austria’s Barbara Allmaier and Dorothea Schwarz finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Germany’s Laura Koch rounded out the top six.
Sophia Gordon led the way for the United States in 13th. Emma Erickson, Macey Schomaker, and Brianna Gosnell all finished inside the top 2, in 17th, 18th, and 20th respectively.
Germany’s Alina Bräutigam finished the race in sixth, which was enough to win gold ahead of Canada’s Embyr-Lee Susko, who had won the first races of the season but did not race in the second half of the year.
Teresa Kirchmair finished the season in third.
