From Altenberg, Germany
For the sixth time this year Kaillie Humphries leaves a track with a medal, but for the first time this year it’s not golden. An uncharacteristically slow second run by the Canadian World Champion left Humprhies dropping from second to third, behind Cathleen Martini and Sandra Kiriasis.
The NED 1 team of Kamphuis/Vis put down a very quick second run and move into the top five, leapfrogging the Schneiderheinze-piloted Germany 3 sled and the Walker-piloted Great Britain 1 sled to finish fourth, while Kamphuis finished fifth.
Difficult second run for Paula Walker, to say the least. Walker came into the second heat in the bronze medal position, and had the lead after Turn 11. A hard hit coming off Turn 12 flipped the British sled, and though the sled did cross the line, Walker will finish 13th.
The American and Russian teams opted out of this weekend’s women’s bobsled event, instead choosing to train in St. Moritz for the World Championships.
