2012/2013 FIBT World Cup – Round 5 – Women’s Skeleton – Heat 1

From La Plagne, France

Last week was a disappointing race for Katie Uhlaender, as the World Champ missed the second heat altogether.  This week, not only will the American make the second heat, she’ll do so as the leader.  Uhlaender has just under a quarter second lead over Canadian Sarah Reid, who had one of the fastest starts of the heat.  A skid on the uphill portion of the French track puts German Anja Huber third.  Teammate Marion Thees had an awful start but an amazing effort closed the gap from almost a full second back to just over .3 seconds.  Russian Maria Orlova is fifth with Canadian Mellisa Hollingsworth sixth.

Kimber Gabryszak is tied for 17th with Joska Le Conte after a bumpy ride down the La Plagne track, but is just a tenth from the top 14.  Canadian Cassie Hawrysh is 13th, but is just outside a top 10.  Brits Shelley Rudman, Lizzy Yarnold and Donna Creighton are 7th, 12th and 19th after the first heat.
