Nydegger Cruises to Lillehammer Gold

From Lillehammer, NOR

(January 12, 2024) – Lukas Nydegger continued a podium streak on Friday as he took gold on the 1994 Olympic track in Lillehammer.

Nydegger took a sizeable early lead over teammate Cedric Renner into the second heat, with a handful of sliders all in contention for medals behind them.

In the second heat Laurence Bostock threw down the second best run of the second heat, and that was enough to catapult the British slider from fourth to no worse than second with Nydegger still to come.

Nydegger’s second slide was as good as his first, and his two downtimes were the two quickest of the race on his way to a .7 second victory over Bostock.

The German’s win was his fifth straight medal in six Europe Cup races.

Bostock took silver, while Wenqiang Geng finished third, edging out Renner by .04 for the final podium spot.

Renner finished fourth, Germany’s Stefan Röttig finished fifth, while China’s Haifeng Zhu took sixth.

Kane Densley and Patrick Atkin finished 14th and 15th to complete the British effort.

For the United States, Bradley Nicol took the top spot for the three athletes entered with a 20th place finish. Nick Tucker finished three spots back in 23rd, while Darryl Payne struggled to match his previous day’s effort and finished 27th.

Allen Blackwell, making his second start of the season, finished 31st, while Jonathan Yaw continued a solid season for Malaysia in 16th.

With two races to go in the 2023/2024 Europe Cup men’s skeleton season, Cedric Renner leads Lukas Nydegger by two points. Stefan Röttig is third, 48 points out of the lead and contending for a German sweep of the top three spots. Wenqiang Geng and Laurence Bostock are fourth and fifth, respectively.
