(January 12, 2024) – Valentina Margaglio and Amedeo Bagnis capped off Italy’s best ever weekend of IBSF World Cup skeleton with a win in the Skeleton Mixed Team Competition in St. Moritz.
The Italian duo had the best time for both the men and the women’s side of the event, Margaglio .22 ahead of Germany’s Susanne Kreher and Bagnis .23 ahead of China’s Zheng Lin. Their combined times worked out to a win of .89 ahead of Kreher and teammate Felix Keisinger.
Earlier in the day, Margaglio won silver in the women’s skeleton race behind Dutch slider Kimberley Bos. In the men’s race later in the day Bagnis won handily over Olympic champion Christopher Grotheer.
Germany won both silver and bronze to round out the podium, with Kreher and Keisinger in second and Jacqueline Pfeifer and Felix Seibel in third.
Kreher and Keisinger took the lead from the ninth starting spot and held it all the way to the final team off, Margaglio and Bagnis. Pfeifer and Seibel overcame a false start penalty to finish third.
Italy’s other team, Alessandra Fumagalli and Mattia Gaspari, missed a podium by just .02. Fumagalli rallied from a wall hit after Horseshoe, then Gaspari put down a nearly flawless run to get the team in contention for medals.
China’s Dan Zhao and Wenhao Chen finished fifth, while Canada’s Jane Channell and Blake Enzie finished sixth.
Great Britain’s teams of Tabitha Stoecker and Marcus Wyatt finished seventh while teammates Freya Tarbit and Craig Thompson finished tenth.
Americans Sara Roderick and Austin Florian finished 14th, while Canada’s Hallie Clarke and David Park finished one spot back in 15th.
