From Altenberg, GER
(December 20, 2023) – Like in the women’s race, Germany swept the podium in Altenberg. Also like in the women’s Europe Cup race, the woman came behind to win by less than a tenth of a second.
Lukas Nydegger held a commanding .39 second advantage over Cedric Renner and Stefan Röttig after one heat, with Renner and Röttig tied, .39 out.
Renner broke the tie with Röttig by out-sliding his teammate by .15 to take the lead with only Nydegger to go. Nydegger had trouble early in his second run and that time deficit snowballed. While he was able to minimize the damage below the Kreisel, his second effort was sixth quickest and dropped him .05 behind Renner to give Renner the victory.
Renner’s gold was the second of his career on the Europe Cup His previous victory was in the 2020/2021 season in Königssee.
For Nydegger, the silver medal was his second medal of his season. Röttig, who helped complete the German podium sweep, scored his fifth straight Europe Cup medal dating back to last season.
China’s Wenqiang Geng finished fourth, .33 out of the medals, while Great Britain’s Laurence Bostock had the quickest run of the second heat to finish fifth.
Germany’s Timm Beiwinkler moved up from eighth to round out the top six.
The United Sstates’ Hunter Williams and Nick Tucker both moved up in the second heat to finish 13th and 14th. Williams was nearly two seconds faster in his second run, while Tucker was over a second quicker in his.
Both Americans moved up at the expense of Great Britain’s Kane Densley. Densley entered the second heat in 11th, but had trouble early in his second run and was never able to recover as he fell to 15th.
