(December 8, 2023) – Selina Egle and Lara Kipp won the first World Cup race of the 2023/2024 season, beating out a new German team for top honors.
Egle and Kipp slid to a lead of over .2 over Dajana Eitberger and Saskia Schirmer in the first heat, with Italy’s Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer back in third.
In the second heat, the team of 2018 Olympic silver medalist Dajana Eitberger and teammate Saskia Schirmer, the track record holders from the previous day’s Nation’s Cup race, set the quick time of the heat to take the lead with only the Austrians to go.
Egle and Kipp were out-started by the German duo, but quickly slid back into the lead. A little issue late brought the Austrians back to the Germans, but Egle and Kipp had enough time banked to hold onto a .113 second advantage over Eitberger and Schirmer to win gold.
Eitberger and Schirmer took silver in their first World Cup race as a team, while Vötter and Oberhofer took bronze.
“Training was good, but a race is a race and it was incredible that we had two clean runs,” said Selina Egle on she and Kipp’s race.
USA’s Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirkby slid to fourth place, just over a tenth out of the medals. Germany’s Jessica Degenhardt and Cheynne Rosenthal rounded out the top five.
Maya Chan and Reannyn Weiler helped put both American sleds in the top six with their sixth place effort.
