From Whistler, CAN
(December 1, 2023) – Canada’s Ryan Kuehn won his first career gold medal in North American Cup action, as he edged Ireland’s Brendan Doyle for the win.
Kuehn had the two fastest pushes in the competition. In the first heat he took a .16 over teammate Troy Wilson, with Doyle only .19 back in third.
On the second run it was Doyle with the quick time of the heat, only.01 off his first run time. He held his spot after Wilson had a bit of trouble late in his run to fall back to what would eventually be third.
That left Kuehn at the top. Kuehn threw down a similar start to his first, with an equally quick run to take the win by .16 over Doyle, with Wilson in third.
The gold for Kuehn was his first. Doyle’s silver was his fifth medal in eight races.
Canada had a strong showing on their home track. Kyle Donsberger and David Park finished fourth and fifth, while Jordan Rwiyamilira finished seventh.
In between of the Canadians was South Korean Hyungjun Sim, who finished sixth.
Josip Brusic made his North American Cup debut with a ninth place finish for Canada, just behind Malaysia’s Jonathan Yaw in eighth.
The United States struggled north of the border. Bradley Nicol finished 11th as the top American. Darryl Payne finished 13th, Nicholas Brooks 15th, and Sam Allred 16th to round out the American effort.
