From Whistler, CAN
(November 29, 2023) – On January 10, 2017, Carter Malyk piloted a sled in North American Cup competition, a race that he finished seventh in. Since then, the Canadian had been absent from IBSF international competition. He made a triumphant return to action in the third race of the NAC tour with a dominant victory in Whistler.
Malyk and brakeman Sam Cuciz cruised to a first heat lead by well over a second ahead of the United States’ Kris Horn, with only one other team within two seconds of the Canadian.
Their second run wasn’t perfect, but didn’t have to be, as they slid to an impressive 1.63 second victory over South Korea’s Jinsu Kim and Sunwook Kim.
The victory for Malyk was his first at the senior level. He had previously won gold medals in Youth Olympic Games qualifying races in Calgary.
Kim’s silver medal was his third straight in NAC competition.
Taylor Austin helped put two Canadian sleds in the top three with a bronze medal run. Austin looked to be on his way to contending for gold during his first run but trouble late dropped him well down the order into sixth. On his second run, he and brakeman Shane Ohrt had the second quickest push and the fastest run of the competition to take the lead for a handful of sleds, eventually finishing third.
Horn and brakeman Jace Johnson finished fourth, while Australian pilots Cam Scott and Rhys Peters finished fifth and sixth.
