From Lake Placid, USA
(March 25, 2023) – Like in the women’s race before them, the men’s race was dominated by the winner, with Jacob Salisbury winning gold in his first look at the Lake Placid track.
Salisbury’s dominance started at the top, where in the first heat he missed the start record by .08. By the time that heat was over he had a .46 advantage over Canada’s Kyle Donsberger, with Dutch slider Mike Rogals in third, .7 back.
On the second heat Salisbury was even quicker off the top, .04 off the track start record. His second run was a tick slower than his first, but enough to give him a 1.36 second victory over Donsberger for gold in his first North American Cup race.
Donsberger won silver, as he edged out Swiss slider Livio Summermatter for the spot. Summermatter put down a huge second run to move up from eighth in the first heat to win bronze.
Rogals finished fourth, only .07 out of the medals, while USA’s Bradley Nicol and France’s Lucas Defayet rounded out the top six. The race was also Defayet’s first at the American track.
Nick Tucker rounded out the top ten for the United States, while teammate Matthew Fortney finished 15th. Canada’s Ryan Kuehn, Tory Wilson, and Jordan Rwiyamilira finished 11th through 13th, respectively.
With one race to go in the North American Cup season, Brendan Doyle holds a 42 point lead over Donsberger, who currently sits third, tied with Ryan Kuehn behind an absent Sebastian Zeleznik. Ghana’s Akwasi Frimpong is fifth overall, only three points behind the Canadians.
