Lanthaler Wins Season Finale in Umhausen

(February 19, 2023) – Evelin Lanthaler completed anoter sweep of the FIL Natural Track women’s luge season as she won the season finale in Umhausen, Austria.

Lanthaler opened up a massive 1.2 second lead over teammate Jenny Castiglioni after one heat, with Greta Pinggera and Austria’s Tina Unterberger both in the hunt for the medals.

On the second run Unterberger put down a strong slide to take the lead with the three Italians to go. Pinggera’s second run wasn’t quite as quick as the Austrian’s, and she dropped behind Unterberger and into second place with two sliders to go.

Castiglioni’s was unable to match her outstanding first run, as she fell well behind Unterberger and Pinggera, as well as behind Austria’s Michele Diepold, with just Lanthaler left to slide.

Despite the deteriorating track conditions Lanthaler’s second run was once again under 1:19 to give her a nearly three second victory over Unterberger.

The victory was the 22nd straight for Lanthaler. A day prior she had clinched her seventh overall title.

Unterberger finished second. Pinggera, making the final start of her World Cup career, finished third.

Unterberger’s finish was enough to put her four points ahead of Pinggera in the season point battle to give her the silver crystal globe, while Pinggera finished her final season in third overall.
