Eitberger Rallies to Win in St. Moritz

(February 19, 2023) – Germany’s Dajana Eitberger came from behind in St. Moritz to both win the World Cup stop and stay in the hunt for the World Cup overall title.

Eitberger ended her first heat in fifth place, in a tight battle with leader Kendija Aparjode, world champion Anna Berreiter, and perennial medal contender Emily Sweeney in the top three, and World Cup point leader Julia Taubitz just ahead in fourth.

On the second run Eitberger had a small skid at the top of her run that looked like it could have kept her out of the lead, if not off the podium altogether. However, from the leader’s box she watched slider by slider fail to catch her.

The final slider down was Latvia’s Aparjode, who had set the quick time of the race in the first heat. A late mistake in her second run dropped her well down the order to give Eitberger, her third win of the 2022/2023 season.

Taubitz slid to second place, just .01 behind Eitberger, while Berreiter helped complete the German sweep of the Swiss podium.

Latvia’s Sigita Berzina and Elina Vitola finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Germany’s Merle Fräbel had the quick downtime of the second heat to move up from 11th to sixth place.

Emily Sweeney struggled on her second run with a few small mistakes that compounded on each other. She eventually finished 11th.

With one race to go in the World Cup season, Julia Taubitz is 90 points ahead of Dajana Eitberger, with Anna Berreiter well behind Eitberger in third. Nobody behind the Germans can catch them, and realistically if all three women complete the final race in Winterberg they’ll finish the season in that order.
