From Umhausen, AUT
(February 18, 2023) – Austria’s Thomas Kammerlander won gold in the penultimate race of the 2022/2023 FIL World Cup season and took over the point lead in the process.
Kammerlander took over the lead in the one-heat race with only point leader Alex Gruber to go, and early on in Gruber’s run it seemed as though the Italian would answer. However Gruber had trouble late and fell down the order to fifth, giving the victory to Kammerlander.
Kammerlander’s margin of victory was exactly one second over Italy’s Florian Clara, with Fabian Brunner winning his third bronze medal in three races on the season.
Daniel Gruber beat out Alex Gruber by .23 for fourth, while Alex finished fifth. Swiss slider Stefan Federer finished a season-best sixth.
The Americans struggled on the Austrian track. Torrey Cookman led the way for the United States in 18th, just ahead of Jacob Sterk and Zane Farnsworth in 19th and 20th, respectively.
With one race to go in the World Cup season, Kammerlander leads Gruber by 25 points. Both men expect to retire from the sport at the end of the season.
