From Igls, AUT
(February 17, 2023) – Great Britain’s outstanding season across seemingly all tours continued on the Intercontinental Cup side of things as Laurence Bostock won his first career IBSF gold medal in Igls, edging out German veteran Alexander Gassner for top honors.
Bostock held a slim .01 second lead over Gassner going into the second heat of competition, with teammate Jacob Salisbury in a tie for third with Gassner’s teammate Lukas Nydegger, only .08 out of the lead.
On the second run Salisbury edged Nydegger by .08 to take the top spot with Gassner and Bostock to go. Gassner’s second run was the quickest of the heat to that point and enough to put him into the lead.
That left Bostock, who was making only his third ICC appearance, between Gassner and gold. Bostock’s second 4.94 start matched his first, and his second slide, while a tick slower than his first, was still enough to give him gold by .11 over Gassner.
Bostock’s gold was the third in his international sliding career. He’d previously had a silver and bronze in European Cup competition.
Behind Gassner in second, Salisbury edged Nydegger for bronze, while Austria’s Alexander Schlintner and Germany’s Felix Seibel rounded out the top six.
Daniel Barefoot finished ninth as the lone American in the field, while Canada’s Ryan Kuehn moved up from 14th in the first heat to finish 13th.
Gassner’s silver medal was enough to clinch his ICC season title with one race to go. Felix Seibel and Jacob Salisbury sit second and third, with only Rasmus Johansen able to break into the top three in the final race of the season.
