From Igls, AUT
(February 17, 2023) – Stefan Röttig had to rally from outside of the top three on his way to gold in Igls, and with it the European Cup season title.
Röttig trailed Great Britain’s Patrick Atkin, Italy’s Giovanni Marchetti, and Switzerland’s Livio Summermatter after one heat, with teammate and European Cup title contender Ludwig Mannhardt just behind in fifth, all separated by just .08.
On the second run Mannhardt put down a quick run to move into the lead with the four contenders to go. Röttig was next, and his second slide was the quickest of the competition to give him the lead with three to go. Neither Summermatter nor Marchetti could match Röttig’s time, leaving only Atkin between himself and the European Cup title.
Atkin’s second push wasn’t quite as quick as his first, but he appeared to be making time up on Röttig on his slide. However just a little trouble late dropped him out of the lead and out off the podium, and gave the victory to the German slider.
Röttig’s margin of victory was .06 over Summermatter as the pair finished first and second for the second straight race. Mannhardt finished the race in third, with Marchetti fourth and Atkin fifth.
Austria’s Roman Tanzer rounded out the top six.
Great Britain’s Kane Densley finished the event in tenth, while USA’s Bradley Nicol finished 14th. Darryl Payne, making his European Cup debut, finished 18th after the first and third quickest starts of the two heats.
With his win, Röttig took the season title, 20 points ahead of Mannhardt. China’s Haifeng Zhu did not start either Igls EC race and finished the season in third. Germany’s Cedric Renner and USA’s Daniel Barefoot rounded out the season’s top five.
