From Igls, AUT
(January 26, 2023) – Guillermo Castillo edged out Hermann Ellmauer for gold in Igls.
The American trailed the Austrian by .18 after one run, with Italy’s Flavio Menardi sitting in third, only .01 behind the American.
On the second run Menardi had issues out of Curve 9 that sank his run, as he eventually finished 14th. Castillo was next, and his second run was quickest of the contenders. Ellmauer was the final slider down, and he couldn’t match Castillo’s pace, and despite a clean bottom part of his run, the Austrian found himself behind by .06 as he crossed the line.
The final results were Castillo as the winner, Ellmauer in second, and USA’s Robert Balk sliding up from sixth to win bronze.
Latvia’s Arturs Klots and Alvils Brants finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Italy’s David Jennewein finished a season-best sixth.
