From Winterberg, GER
(February 11, 2023) – Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt set the two fastest men’s doubles times of the day in Winterberg on their way to a .43 second victory over teammates Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken.
Wendl and Arlt opened up a .138 second lead over Austrians Juri Gatt and Riccardo Schöpf, with Latvians Martins Bots and Roberts Plume and Austrians Yannick Müller and Armin Frauscher all in the hunt for medals.
On the second run it was Eggert and Benecken, who was sixth after the first heat, that put down a time that was only matched by their German teammates. The next four teams all slid down and none could match Eggert and Benecken, and the duo held the lead with only Wendl and Arlt to go.
Wendl and Arlt couldn’t be touched. Their second run was even faster than the first, and their combined time was .43 quicker than Eggert and Benecken for their third gold medal in the past five races.
For Eggert and Benecken, their silver was their fifth on the season.
Bots and Plume held on for third, their fourth straight medal.
Müller and Frauscher finished fourth, ahead of Müller and Frauscher and Germany’s Orlamünder and Gubitz.
The United States’ Zack Digregorio and Sean Hollander finished ninth on Hollander’s birthday. Teammates Dana Kellogg and Duncan Segger finished 13th.
With three events left in the 2022/2023 sliding season, Wendl and Arlt hold a 14 point lead over Eggert and Benecken. Bots and Plume are third.
