From Oberhof, GER
(January 29, 2023) – Germany won their ninth team relay world championship but had to come from behind to do so to edge Austria for the top spot.
Austria was the penultimate team off the top in the relay event and slid into the lead well ahead of Latvia. It was then Germany’s turn, and they opened up a slight lead over Austria. Max Langenhan couldn’t quite keep pace with the time set by Jonas Müller and as he hit the paddle Austria was well ahead.
World champions Eggert and Benecken then pulled off the top and at the last split was still behind the Austrians. But a nearly flawless slide by the Germans got them just ahead of Austria, winning by just .023.
It was the ninth win in 11 events for the Germans.
Austria finished second for their fourth silver medal, while Latvia took bronze, their fifth.
Italy had three clean runs but couldn’t quite make it to the podium and finished fourth, The United States finished fifth, while Poland rounded out the top six.
