From Oberhof, GER
(January 28, 2023) – Germany swept the women’s luge podium in the FIL World Championships on Saturday as they took four of the top five positions in the event.
Anna Berreiter opened up a .074 advantage over teammate Julia Taubitz in the first heat, with Austria’s Madeleine Egle in third, just .076 behind the leader. Germany’s Merle Fräbel sat fourth, and Dajana Eitberger fifth.
Eitberger put down the third quickest run of the race on her second run to move into the lead. Neither Fräbel nor Egle could match Eitberger’s pace and fell to third and second behind leader Eitberger with only Taubitz and Berreiter to go.
Taubitz’s second run was only .001 off of the pace Berreiter set in the first heat and enough to move into the lead.
All that remained was Berreiter. The first heat leader was quick off the top, and by the first split was in the lead. While she did come back to Taubitz, she had enough in the bank to take gold by .058 over Tabutiz, with Eitberger in third.
Egle finished fourth to break up a sweep of the top four positions. Fräbel finished fifth and Lisa Schulte of Austria sixth.
Summer Britcher was the top American in the field in 12th, two spots ahead of teammate Brittney Arndt. Ashley Farquharson finished just behind Arndt in 15th.
Trinity Ellis finished 18th as the lone Canadian to get a second run in the world championships. Caitlin Nash just missed out on a second run in 22nd, while Carolyn Maxwell finished 30th.
Ireland’s Elsa Desmond finished 35th.
