From Sigulda, LAT
(January 20, 2023) – Nico Semmler held off a strong slide by teammmate Hans Peter Hannighofer to win gold in Sigulda.
The two Germans put on a good battle, as Semmler opened up a .11 second advantage over Hannighofer after the first run. On the second trip down Hannighofer and brakeman Tim Gessenhardt put down the fast start of the heat and was quickest at every split to set the quick time of the heat.
It was up to Semmler and brakeman Max Neumann to answer. While the do was out-matched at the start, Semmler was able to keep Hannighofer honest, and when Semmler crossed the line he found himself victorious by .03 over his teammate.
David Kaufmanis was third on his home track, .86 back. Nobody else was within two seconds of the leader.
David Baechler of France finished fourth, ahead of Renars Grantins in fifth and Monaco’s Boris Vain in sixth.
