(January 20, 2023) – Italy’s Amadeo Bagnis slid to his second straight European Cup victory in Sigulda, edging out Great Britain’s Laurence Bostock for the top spot.
Bagnis carried a .09 second advantage over Bostock into the second heat. On that second run Bostock set what was, at the time, the quickest run of the race to take the lead with only Bagnis to go.
Bagnis answered, however, and his second run was the quickest once again to give the Italian a .14 second victory over Bostock.
Behind the two gold medal contenders, Germany’s Lukas Nydegger rallied from a disappointing finish on Thursday to slide into a bronze medal. He was only .19 out of the lead after the first heat, but a slightly skiddy run on his second trip down the Latvian track kept him out of a better finishing position.
Stefan Röttig finished fourth, .09 out of the medals, and .02 ahead of China’s Haifeng Zhu in fifth. Ludwig Mannhardt helped place three Germans in the top six with his sixth place effort.
The United States put both of their sliders in the top ten, with Hunter Williams and Daniel Barefoot tying for ninth place.
Outside of Bostock’s finish, Jacob Salisbury finished seventh for Great Britain, while Patrick Atkin crashed late in his run and finished 22nd.
Mike Rogals finished 19th for the Netherlands in his second start of the season.
