Hermann Cruises to Altenberg Gold

From Altenberg, GER

(January 20, 2023) – Another race in Altenberg and another gold for Tina Hermann, as Hermann slid to a dominating victory in the German town.

Hermann opened up a small lead, .13, ahead of Canada’s Mimi Rahneva, with Janine Flock and Susanne Kreher both lingering around the medal discussion and the remainder of the field well back.

On the second run Kreher put down a run that was plenty good enough to take the lead with three sliders to go. Flock was next and the Austrian, making just her third start since returning from a back injury, didn’t slide quite as fast but was fast enough to hold off Kreher by just .01.

Rahneva followed, and easily out-started Flock, and had a decent lead through most of her run. She began to come back to the Austrian, and as she crossed the line she was only .02 back, but that was just good enough for eventually fourth.

That left Hermann, whose second run was the quickest of the heat by .4 over anyone else as she slid to a .62 second victory over Flock, with Kreher third.

It was the sixth consecutive gold medal for Hermann in Altenberg between the World Cup and World Championships. She’s won the last four World Cup races dating back to Lake Placid before the Christmas break.

Rahneva’s second run was so close but she missed out on a medal by .01 to finish fourth. Kimberley Bos, the defending World Cup overall champion finished fifth, just ahead of  Canada’s Jane Channell in sixth.

The sixth for Channell both tied a career-best in Altenberg World Cup action and was a season-best finish.

Kelly Curtis put down a strong pair of runs for the United States to move up from ninth to finish seventh, a World Cup career best in Altenberg. Teammate Hallie Clarke finished 15th in her first World Cup start on the German track, while Kendall Wesenberg finished 18th to round out the American effort.

Great Britain’s Brogan Crowley threw down a big second run to move up to eighth from a tie for 11th with Czechia’s Anna Fernstädt. Fernstädt moved up to ninth with her second run.

Lichtenstein’s Katharina Eigenmann finished 22nd in her World Cup debut.

With her win, Tina Hermann extends her World Cup point lead over Mimi Rahneva, with Kimberley Bos only two points behind the Canadian in third. Susanne Kreher, Kelly Curtis, and Hanna Neise round out the top six.
