From Jaufental, ITA
(January 15, 2023) – Thomas Kammerlander had a disappointing race to open the doubleheader in Jaufental as his race ended with him in fifth place, well out of the lead.
One morning later Kammerlander once again found himself outside of the podium after one run, but this time he was not going to be denied a medal.
Kammerlander entered the second heat in fourth place, .33 outside of the lead held by Alex Gruber of Italy. The Austrian put down a big second run, the quickest of the second heat, to slide into the lead. He then held the spot as Italy’s Fabian Brunner and Austria’s Michael Sheikl both could not match Kammerlander’s speed.
That left Italy’s Alex Gruber between Kammerlander and gold. Gruber put down a good slide, the second best of the heat, but couldn’t match the run Kammerlander put down. As Gruber crossed the line he was .04 back in second, with Kammerlander winning gold.
The win for Kammerlander was his second of the season. For Gruber, the silver was his third straight medal.
Brunner, who tied Florian Clara for bronze a day ago, once again won bronze. Scheikl finished fourth, while Clara finished fifth.
The United States had three sliders entered in the race. For the second straight day, Torrey Cookman finished 16th to lead the USA. Zane Farnsworth finished 20th, and Jacob Sterk 22nd.
With three races remaining in the World Cup season, Gruber and Scheikl are tied for the World Cup lead, with Kammerlander only five points back. Florian Clara is fourth, 75 points back.
