From Jaufental, ITA
(January 14, 2023) – Evelin Lanthaler won again on the FIL World Cup, but Greta Pinggera didn’t make it easy for her.
The two Italians entered the second run in Jaufental separated by just .08, with the rest of the field over a half of a second back.
On the second run Pinggera appeared to tap the wall while driving her sled deep into a corner. While her downtime was, at the time, the fastest of the heat it was clear a clean run by Lanthaler would likely be enough for gold.
Lanthaler’s splits on her second run were close to those of Pinggera through that curve midway down the course, and from there Lanthaler pulled away to win her second straight gold to start the season.
Pinggera won silver, her first of the season after finishing third in Winterleiten.
In what shaped up to be the battle for bronze, Italian Daniela Mittermair out-slid Austria’s Tina Unterberger for bronze and an Italian sweep of the podium.
Unterberger finished the event in fourth, just ahead of teammate Riccarda Ruetz in fifth.
Two North Americans made the trip to Jaufental, with USA’s Katie Cookman scoring a 13th place finish, one spot ahead of Nadja Loder in 14th.
