(December 9, 2022) – Three races into the FIL World Cup season and there’s been exactly one winner on the women’s side of things: Madeleine Egle. On this day, Egle held off a team of Germans to win her third gold medal of the season.
Egle came into the second heat in second place, just .014 behind German rookie Merle Fräbel and only .09 ahead of Julia Taubitz despite a very bumpy run up to the finish line much like Wolfgang Kindl’s runs earlier in the day.
On the second run Taubitz slid into medal position on the strength of what was to that point the fastest run of the race. Egle went next, and coupled what would be the sixth quickest start of the heat with the fastest run of the race to take the lead with only Fräbel to go.
Fräbel, sliding in her second World Cup weekend, put down a strong start and an otherwise clean slide. However, she couldn’t match the speed of Egle, and as she crossed the line she found herself in third; enough for a medal, but not enough to keep Egle off of the top of the podium.
The gold for Egle was her third of the season between World Cup and Sprint World Cup. Taubitz won silver, her third medal of the season, while Fräbel took bronze.
Germany placed all four of their women in the top five. Dajana Eitberger finished fourth, her best finish of the season, while Anna Berreiter had a skid and a foot tap out of the final curve but still put down a run good enough to hold onto fifth place.
Italy’s Andrea Vötter strung together a pair of strong starts with two clean runs to finish in sixth.
It was another strong showing by the American women. Summer Britcher overcame a few small mistakes in her first run to move up from ninth to seventh. Emily Sweeney finished tenth after some trouble at the start of her second run set her back, and Brittney Arndt threw together two strong runs to finish 12th.
Canada’s women, making their first starts of the season, all found themselves in the top 20. Trinity Ellis led the way in 13th place. Carolyn Maxwell moved up one spot in the second run from 16th to 15th, leapfrogging teammate Caitlin Nash who finished 16th. Natalie Corless rounded out the Canadian effort by moving up from 19th to 18th in her second run.
