From Igls, AUT
(December 9, 2022) – Nico Semmler came from behind to edge out Emils Cipulis to win gold in Austria.
The German was behind by .02 after the first run, with Cipulis’s Latvian team out-starting Semmler by over a tenth. On the second run Semmler nearly matched his first drive to move into the lead with only Cipulis to go.
That left the German as the only thing between Cipulis and his first ever four-man gold medal. The Latvians were again quick off the top, and Cipulis also put down a time that rivaled his first. But Semmler’s drive was just a tick better, and enough to edge out Cipulis by .07 for gold, with Cipulis winning silver.
Semmler’s win was his third straight in four-man bobsled, and fifth in his last sixth starts. For Cipulis, the silver was his third in his last five starts, with all five finishes placing him on the podium.
Chunjian Li finished in a solid third, .23 behind Semmler and .14 ahead of Germany’s Max Illmann for his first career four-man bobsled bronze medal.
Illmann finished fourth, with Romain Heinrich fifth. Jakabs Kalenda and Timo Rohner tied for sixth, with Kalenda scoring a career best four-man finish.
Adam Baird and Nick Gleeson finished 16th and 19th for Great Britain.
