From Igls, AUS
(December 8, 2022) – Australian Breeana Walker won gold in Igls on Thursday, beating out Germany’s Maureen Zimmer for the top spot of the European Cup podium.
Walker was the only slider to break 55 seconds in each heat, with a pair of downtimes that were exactly .28 quicker than those of Zimmer. The gold was Walker’s third straight in the discipline after skipping the opening two races in Lillehammer.
Zimmer had the quick push of both heats (tied with Walker in the first), but was unable to convert that into gold. While she has yet to win a gold medal, Zimmer has finished on the podium in four of her five races, finishing fourth in the other race.
China’s Qing Ying edged out teammate Mingming Huai for the final medal, winning bronze by .17 over Huai. Huai did put together a solid second run, the third quickest, to move up from fifth in the first heat to finish fourth.
Margo Boch, the winner of the opening two monobob races of the European Cup season, finished fifth, just ahead of Andreea Grecu of Romania in sixth.
Great Britain’s rookie pilots fared well in Igls, with Adele Nicoll moving up from ninth in the first heat to finish seventh, while Mica Moore put down two consistent runs to finish 13th.
The field was the largest monobob race to date, with 24 sleds entered. Sylvia Hoffman of the United States was entered but did not start.
