(December 3, 2022) – Germany’s Kim Kalicki won her second straight women’s bobsled event to start the 2022/2023 season and broke one of the older track records in the process.
In the first heat Kalicki and brakewoman Leonie Fiebig set the quick start of the heat, and matched that with the fastest downtime ever for a two-woman sled: 48.60. That broke a 16 year old track record by Shauna Rohbock of 48.73.
While she couldn’t match the speed of her second run, Kalicki was once again the fastest slider of the heat and slid into a gold medal, .23 ahead of teammate Laura Nolte.
The win was Kalicki’s fifth World Cup gold of her relatively short career.
Nolte and Lena Neunecker were second, edging out Kaillie Humphries and brakewoman Jasmine Jones in third. Humphries put down a solid drive for her second run, but that time was matched by Nolte to give Nolte the .09 second edge.
The silver for Nolte is her first of the season, while the bronze for Humphries is her second straight in two-woman.
In the four sled battle for medals, Lisa Buckwitz was the odd woman out, missing out on a medal by .09. Canada’s Bianca Ribi finished fifth, while the Swiss duo of Melanie Hasler and Nadja Pasternack had two big starts on their way to a sixth place finish.
Cynthia Appiah finished seventh in the second Canadian sled. USA’s Nicole Vogt finished eighth, while rookie Riley Compton finished ninth to round out the American effort.
