From Altenberg, GER
(December 2, 2022) – Germany’s Nico Semmler cruised to victory in Altenberg to win his first European Cup gold of the 2022/2023 season.
Semmler and his team had competitive starts off the top of Altenberg, but by the third split they were in the lead on both heats. Semmler led his German squad to the two quickest runs of the race on his way to a .43 second victory over Italy’s Patrick Baumgartner.
The gold for Semmler was his second in European Cup action in what is his second IBSF season. Both have come in four-man bobsled.
Baumgartner entered the second heat .04 ahead of Latvia’s Emils Cipulis, and while his second run was only fourth quickest it was enough to edge out Cipulis for bronze by .01
Cipulis finished third for his third straight four-man medal.
European Cup point leader Max Illmann finished fourth, only .03 out of the medals. Teammate Hans Peter Hannighofer finished fifth, while Romania’s Mihai Tentea rounded out the top six.
