From Lake Placid, USA
(December 1, 2022) – There are few active athletes with as many starts across two-man and four-man bobsled as Brazil’s Edson Bindilatti. Across both disciplines, the four-time Olympian has 136 starts as a pilot between the Olympics (5), World Championships (2), World Cup (11), European Cup (13) and North American Cup (105). Over that time, he’s done just about everything, but on Thursday he did something he’d never done: Won two-man gold.
Bindilatti, with Edson Martins on his brakes, opened up a .12 second advantage over Youngjin Suk and Hyunwoo Jung of Korea. On the second run Suk set the quick time of the heat, putting the pressure on the big Brazilian. Bindilatti answered, and while he was off of Suk’s pace he had enough in his first run to take gold by .04 over the Korean.
The win for Bindilatti came in his 58th NAC two-man start. For Martins, it was his 40th two-man start across the various tours.
The silver for Suk was his first medal of the season. He and Jung had the quickest starts of the race.
Pat Norton finished third for his second straight two-man bronze medal in North American Cup. He’s finished in the top six in the past three two-man races in Lake Placid.
Jamaica’s Seldwyn Morgan finished fourth, up from fifth in the first heat, while Jinsu Kim and Orion Edwards rounded out the top six.
USA’s Zachery Snyder finished eighth.
