From Lillehammer, NOR
(November 30, 2022) – A seemingly endless amount of racing continued in Lillehammer with the opening race of the 2022/2023 FIL Junior World Cup on Wednesday, and in it Germany’s Anka Jänicke edged out Antonia Pietschmann to win gold.
Jänicke carried a .099 second lead over Austria’s Barbara Allmaier into the second heat, with Pietschmann sitting in third, just .032 behind the Austrian. On the second run Pietschmann put down what would be the quickest run of the second heat to leapfrog Allmaier with only Jänicke to go.
Jänicke was consistent with her second start, only .001 off her first start time, and while her second run didn’t match the pace of the first, it was enouhg to hold off her teammate by just over a tenth of a second to give Germany a one-two finish to start the season.
Allmaier won bronze, .038 behind Pietschmann.
Germany took four of the top five spots, with Alina Brautigam and Lina-Malin Schmid finishing fourth and fifth.
Ukraine’s Yulianna Tunytska finished in sixth.
The United States put one slider in the top ten, with Sophia Gordon in ninth place. Emma Erickson set the quick start of the race in the first heat on her way to a 18th place finish.
