(November 26, 2022) – Alexander Gassner slid to his first victory in the 2022/2023 Intercontinental Cup season, taking top honors in Winterberg.
Gassner, a six-time World Cup medalist, set the quick time in both heats on his way to a .27 second victory over teammate Felix Seibel. Gassner held a .07 second advantage over Seibel after one run, and was .2 quicker on the second to take gold.
Gassner’s ICC gold was his first since the 2015/2016 season. He has spent the last three seasons on the World Cup circuit.
For Seibel, the 2020/2021 ICC champion, the silver was his third medal in his past four ICC races.
Great Britain’s Crag Thompson had the quickest start of the second heat on his way to a bronze medal, his second straight.
Germany’s Lukas Nydegger finished fourth, up from fifth in the first heat, while Denmark’s Rasmus Johansen finished a career-best fifth.
Jacob Salisbury helped put both British sleds in the top six with a sixth place effort, .1 ahead of Liechtenstein’s Jean Jacques Buff.
Daniel Barefoot was the top North American in the field, guiding his American sled to a 12th place finish. Teammate Hunter Williams just missed out on a second run with a 21st place finish, while Canada’s Mark Lynch finished 15th.
Luxembourg’s Jeff Bauer finished 20th.
