Feb. 25, 2021 – Jonas Frei won his first IBSF Para Sport World Championship, pulling away in the second day of sliding to take gold.
Canada’s Lonnie Bissonnette took the lead early, edging out Frei by .13 in the first run. Frei charged back, setting the quick time in both heats two and three after Bissonette struggled in both heats. In the final run Bissonnette found his form to move into the lead once again with only Frei to go.
Frei could muster only the fifth quickest run of the final heat, but had a full second over Bissonnettte going into the run, and that was more than enough to win gold.
With his gold, Frei became the youngest ever IBSF Para Sport World Champion, and first Swiss slider to win gold in the event.
Bissonnette’s final run was enough to move him into the silver medal position, edging out Sweden’s Sebastian westin for the spot by just .03.
Great Britian’s Corie Mapp was in medal contention after one day of sliding, but his third run was only the 12th quickest. He finished fourth, nearly a full second out of the medals.
Germany’s Nikolai Johann finished in fifth place, while Austria’s Hermann Ellmauer and Norway’s Guro Fronsdal tied for sixth.
