Rukosuev Edges Bagnis for EC Gold

Feb. 19, 2021 – Russia’s Evgeniy Rukosuev edged out Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis to win gold in the European Cup finale in Igls.

The race was tight throughout the field, with Austria’s Alexander Schlintner holding a .02 second advantage over Rukosuev going into the second heat. On the second run, Bagnis threw down the fastest run of the race, which was enough to jump Lukas Nydegger and move into the medals. Rukosuev’s second time was slower than Bagnis’ but the Russian had enough time banked to edge out the Italian by .02. Alexander Schlintner could only muster the third qiuckest time of the heat to drop out of the lead and into third.

The win for Rukosuev came in his first European Cup start in two years and was his third straight victory on the EC tour. For Bagnis, the silver medal is his fourth straight medal on the back end of three straight golds.

Germany’s Lukas Nydegger and Cedric Renner finished fourth and fifth, while Great Britain’s Laurence Bostock rounded out the top six.

The United States’ John Daly finished 12th. The race qualified Daly to compete in the IBSF World Cup over the 2021/2022 season.

Great Britain’s Patrick Atkin finished one spot behind Daly in 13th in his first IBSF international competition. Daniel Read finished 23rd and Ronnie Wells 25th to round out the British efffort.
