From St. Moritz, SUI
Feb. 18, 2021 – Canada’s Lonnie Bissonnette kicked off the 2020/2021 IBSF Para Sport World Cup season in St. Moritz in a position he knows so well: On top of the podium.
Bissonnette opened up a .37 lead over Switzerland’s Christopher Stewart in the first heat, with Stewart’s teammate Jonas Frei lingering around in third. On the second run the Swiss pilots were the quickest on their home track, with Stewart and Frei setting the two fastest times of the heat. Bissonnette, though, had enough in the bank to hang onto first by .12 over Stewart to win the season opener, with Stewart and Frei in second and third.
The gold medal for Bissonnette was his first ever in Para Sport World Cup action in St. Moritz. It was his 13th career gold medal.
Great Britain’s Corie Mapp finished fourth for his best finish in four races. Sweden’s Sebastian Westin and Guro Fronsdal rounded out the top six in fifth and sixth, respectively.
The IBSF Para Sport World Cup will continue in St. Moritz on the 19th and 23rd of February before moving to La Plagne on March 6th and 7th to finish out their season. The World Championships will take place in St. Moritz on February 25th & 26th.
